Let me just start by saying that I have never attempted a cake roll, ever. But, when I was scrolling through Pinterest for ideas this one immediately caught my eye! This year, I decided to do two different 4th of July themed desserts. I also whipped up some super cute flag cupcakes which you can check out, here. With recipes I like to add in my own spin sometimes, and use the recipe as more of a guideline. For this cake roll I used this recipe from Deborah’s (Taste and Tell) blog! Her blog is filled with tasty recipes, and I’d definitely recommend checking them out to get some good ole’ inspiration.
Similar to the cupcake recipe that I used, the ingredients in this cake roll are all items that I already had on hand. The recipe uses Marshmallow Creme for the frosting, but being that I’m not a marshmallow fan I used homemade cream cheese frosting instead. Also, the recipe does not specify how much food coloring to use in the batters. I bought the Wilton Brand Gel Colors and used 10 drops of red, and 6 drops of blue. Accidentally, I made more red than blue which is why there is more red in the center of the cake roll. My ‘eye balling’ failed me. For the color stripes I used the suggestion in the recipe, and put them in Ziploc bags with a hole to pour them. I also found that it was easier to pour the lines coming towards myself. It gave me more control (my lines were still a mess) but it was much easier that way.
Ya’ll this cake roll really gave me a run for my money. Beforehand, I was most worried about actually rolling it. And, the roll is what messed me up. I’m definitely going to attempt another cake roll, but I’m light years away from being a cake roll pro. I did manage to get both colors to show (took two cuts, ugh) so I’m pretty proud of myself. I’m a bit of a perfectionist, so I didn’t even want to post the pictures of this cake roll but I’m learning. As I started taking pictures, it turned into a little avalanche and as you can see in the snaps it started cracking in some places. I’m not sure why, but luckily the entire thing didn’t crumble. This cake roll was definitely more challenging than the cupcakes that I made, but it was fun and the recipe was easy to follow.
